Staff scheduling and rostering: A review of applications, methods and models

چکیده
This paper presents a review of staff scheduling and rostering, an area that has become increasingly important as business becomes more service oriented and cost conscious in a global environment. Optimised staff schedules can provide enormous benefits, but require carefully implemented decision support systems if an organisation is to meet customer demands in a cost effective manner while satisfying requirements such as flexible workplace agreements, shift equity, staff preferences, and part-time work. In addition, each industry sector has its own set of issues and must be viewed in its own right. There are many computer software packages for staff scheduling, ranging from spreadsheet implementations of manual processes through to mathematical models using efficient optimal or heuristic algorithms. We do not review software packages in this paper. Rather, we review rostering problems in specific application areas, and the models and algorithms that have been reported in the literature for their solution. We also survey commonly used methods for solving rostering problems. 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nurse rostering using fuzzy logic: A case study
In this paper, we used the fuzzy set theory for modeling flexible constraints and uncertain data in nurse scheduling problems and proposed a fuzzy linear model for nurse rostering problems. The developed model can produce rosters that satisfy hospital objectives, ward requirements and staff preferences by satisfying their requests as much as possible. Fuzzy sets are used for modeling demands of...
متن کاملPETRA : A Programmable Optimisation Engine and Toolbox for Personnel Rostering Applications
This paper presents a general optimisation-based rostering engine developed by the University of Auckland. This engine is designed to solve a wide range of personnel scheduling (staff rostering) problems. The engine is currently being used to roster over 700 staff at an Australian call centre and also for the rostering of 50 immigration staff at Auckland International Airport. It is being trial...
متن کاملQuantitative Approaches on Staff Scheduling and Rostering in Hospitality Management: An Overview
Staff scheduling and rostering problems, with application in several application areas, from transportation systems to hospitals, have been widely addressed by researchers. This is not the case of hospitality services, which have been forgotten by the quantitative research literature. The purpose of this paper is to provide some insights on the application of staff scheduling and rostering prob...
متن کاملAnalysis of three mathematical models of the Staff Rostering Problem
Staff rostering is a major challenge in the service sector, where exploitation costs are essentially made up of staffing costs. Searching for an optimum has direct economic returns but the rosters must satisfy numerous legal constraints. This paper presents work on an exact approach using branch-and-price methods on a concrete situation. We develop three MILP models and extend them with valid i...

This work-in-progress concerns the investigation of a real-world problem of scheduling catering and house keeping workforce in the hospitality industry. The corresponding author of this paper has been involved in a consultancy project with the problem owner for the past 8 months. The application problem described in this paper belongs to the category of problems known to operations research spe...
